The Ultimate Guide to Gorilla Trekking in Uganda & Rwanda

Gorilla trekking is one of the most thrilling and life-changing wildlife experiences in the world. Few adventures compare to standing just meters away from a family of endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Uganda and Rwanda are two of the best destinations for this incredible encounter, offering well-organized trekking experiences that attract travelers from around the globe.

This guide covers everything you need to know about gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda, from what to expect and the best seasons to visit, to packing lists and permit information.

Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest & Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a prime destination for gorilla trekking. The two main locations for trekking are:

  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – A UNESCO World Heritage site, this dense forest hosts over 20 habituated gorilla families and offers the most trekking options in Uganda.
  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – Located in the Virunga Mountains, this park has one habituated gorilla group and offers a more exclusive trekking experience.

Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding, especially in Bwindi, where the terrain is steep and the vegetation is dense. Mgahinga and Volcanoes National Park tend to have slightly easier treks due to more open landscapes. A moderate to high level of fitness is recommended for trekkers.

Best Seasons for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but some seasons offer better conditions than others:

  • Dry Season (June to September & December to February)
    • Best time for trekking due to less rain and easier hiking conditions.
    • Trails are drier and more accessible.
    • High demand for permits, so booking in advance is essential.
  • Wet Season (March to May & October to November)
    • Fewer tourists, making the experience more intimate.
    • Lush green scenery, perfect for photography.
    • More difficult trekking conditions due to muddy trails and rain.
